Manchester City beat Manchester United 7-6 on penalties after a 1-1 draw after 90 minutes.

The 2024 Community Shield contested between Manchester United and Manchester City went the distance after a draw in normal time.

In a rematch of last season's FA Cup final in which Manchester United emerged victorious both sides had chances to go a goal up in the first half, but a poor standard of finishing meant that neither side could gain a numerical advantage.

Story of the Match The chance of the first half came when Amad Diallo received the ball following a one-two with Casemiro and he unselfishly attempted to play the ball across goal to Mason Mount, but the Englishman could not quite reach it.

City were statistically dominant in the first half as they often are.

In the second half, on came Toby Collyer, who is highly thought of at Old Trafford, for his professional debut. For City, the introduction of Savinho changed the pace of the game for the blue side of Manchester.

At 75 minutes yet another beautiful pass from Fernandes, one the Premier League has become accustomed to over the years, allowed Alejandro Garnacho to play in Marcus Rashford who had only the keeper to beat but he hit the base of the post.

A weaving run from Garnacho, who knows all about performing against his clubs' bitter rivals - having scored in the FA Cup final in May, as well as providing an assist for Marcus Rashford in a comeback win the season prior - allowed the Argentine to elude the City defence and dispatch the ball into Ederson's bottom left corner.

A rare headed effort for Bernardo Silva wrong-footed Andre Onana in the Manchester United goal to level with very little time to go.

Penalties followed as the two sides were not separable by 95 minutes worth of football, the 11th such time that this has happened in the Community Shield.

Bruno Fernandes stepped up first for United, sending the City keeper the wrong way to put United 1-0 up in the shootout.

Goal scorer Bernardo Silva was next but his penalty was parried away by Andre Onana and this handed the Red Devils the advantage.

The first three penalty takers in the shootout all played in the Euro 2024 for Portugal as Diogo Dalot dispatched Manchester United's second penalty to make it 2-0.

Second-half substitute Kevin De Bruyne, only on for the 5 minutes of added time, was next and he calmly delivered for the Cityzens.

Manchester United's goal scorer Alejandro Garnacho netted Manchester United's third penalty to guide United to a 3-1 advantage.

Norweigan powerhouse Erling Haaland was next, and the brutish striker sent Onana, who tried putting his opponent off by gesturing to his left, the wrong way as he slotted into the bottom corner.

Returning after months of exile from the Manchester United squad, Jadon Sancho was next. His effort was tipped onto the post by Ederson to miss the first penalty for Manchester United.

Arguably City's best player in the second half Savio took his first penalty of his Manchester City career, and it did not disappoint hitting it low into the net.

His compatriot but now rival, Casemiro cooly dispatched the last penalty before sudden death.

In a surprise twist, Ederson was the fifth taker for City, again the ball was in the back of the net much to Onana's despair.

The first penalty of sudden death was handed to Scott McTominay and his penalty hit the back of the net superbly.

Centre midfielder Matheus Nunes dispatched the best penalty of the shootout with a thunderous strike into the roof of the net.

Lisandro Martinez put United back ahead calmly to pile pressure on City yet again.

Following a good penalty by City's Ruben Dias, Manchester United finally buckled under the pressure. Veteran Jonny Evans looked up the the sky in disbelief after he scooped the ball over the bar which meant City only had to score to win their first Community Shield in 6 years.

The 2024 Community Shield went the way of City after Manuel Akanji fired down the middle and off the crossbar to send Manchester United home the unhappier side.

Player of the Match Had Manchester United held on to win in normal time the player of the match would be a little more evident thanks to Garnacho's opener.

But both shootout winners Akanji and Bernardo Silva deserve the honour as they both provided vital moments for the Blues.

But Bernardo Silva just edges it due to his wonderful header in the dying minutes of the match just as it looked like Manchester United would beat their cross-city rivals.

Honourable mention goes to Oscar Bobb, as the young Norweigan put the United defence to the sword but could not quite make an impact on the scoresheet.
